Season Got You Anxious? Here’s How to Prepare Your Mind as Well as Your Home

In Texas, hurricane season is a fact of life—and so is the anxiety that comes with it. From stocked-up shelves to non-stop weather alerts, there’s a certain buzz in the air. But while we’re busy filling our bathtubs, gassing up our cars, and buying enough toilet paper to last a lifetime, we often forget one essential form of preparedness: our mental health.

At SoLuna Mental Wellness, we believe caring for your nervous system is just as important as caring for your home. Here’s how to do both.

Why Hurricane Season Can Feel So Overwhelming

  • It’s unpredictable. You might be safe one day and evacuating the next.

  • It disrupts routines. Work, school, sleep—everything gets thrown off.

  • It brings up past trauma. If you’ve lived through a bad storm, your body remembers—even if your mind doesn’t.

Add to that the pressure to stay “calm” and “prepared,” and it’s no wonder anxiety spikes during storm season.

But here’s the good news: just like you can prep your home, you can prep your mind too.

5 Simple Ways to Prepare Mentally for Hurricane Season

1. Create a Calm Corner

Designate a space in your home that feels soothing. Think: cozy blanket, favorite candle, journal, or calming playlist. This becomes your go-to when you need to self-regulate.

2. Stay Informed—but Don’t Overdo It

Limit news exposure to trusted sources once or twice a day. Constant doomscrolling activates your fight-or-flight system—and drains your battery fast.

3. Stick to Routines Where You Can

Brush your teeth, drink water, stretch, eat meals—tiny rituals bring your body a sense of safety even when the outside world feels chaotic.

4. Talk About It (Even If You Think You Shouldn’t Be Anxious)

Anxiety thrives in isolation. Text a friend, check in with your therapist, or write about what you're feeling. It’s not silly. It’s self-awareness.

5. Prepare Your Emotional “Go Bag”

This isn’t just batteries and flashlights. It’s things like:

  • A few grounding affirmations

  • A photo that makes you smile

  • Something to fidget with

  • Herbal tea or a favorite snack

  • A phone list of people who help you feel safe

For Those Already Feeling the Storm Inside

If you’re already spiraling, pause and try one of these:

  • 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Exercise: Name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, 3 you can hear, 2 you can smell, 1 you can taste.

  • Breathwork: Inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 6. Repeat for a few rounds.

  • Mantra: “I am prepared. I am safe enough right now. I can meet this moment.”

SoLuna’s Perspective: Rhythms, Not Reactions

Nature moves in cycles, and so do we. Storms come—and they pass. What helps us weather them is rhythm, connection, and care.

So yes, buy the batteries. Fill the bathtub.
But don’t forget to check in with you, too.

Because preparing your nervous system is one of the most powerful forms of hurricane readiness there is.
